Sylvester Young Cobb

(1803-1856)

 

1.  Sylvester Young COBB was born on May 27, 1803 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.  He was the son of Archibald Cobb and Rebecca James, and the grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Young of Catawba County, North Carolina.  He appeared on the census in 1830 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He died on May 27, 1856 in Blount County, Tennessee.  Although Sylvester lived and died in Tennessee, six of his twelve known children migrated to either Texas or the Indian Territory.

 

He was married to Artemisia "Arty" HALL on October 13, 1825 in Monroe County, Tennessee.  Artemisia "Arty" HALL was born about 1808 in Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1830 in Blount County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  She died in January 1861.  Sylvester Young COBB and Artemisia "Arty" HALL had the following children:

          6               v.   James A. COBB was born on July 26, 1835 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He died on May 11, 1856 in Blount County, Tennessee.   He died unmarried and without issue.

        +7               vi.   Thomas Pervane COBB (born on August 31, 1837).

        +8              vii.   Samuel Sylvester COBB (born on March 10, 1840).

        +9             viii.   John Oliver COBB (born on June 4, 1842).

        10               ix.   William Caswell COBB was born about 1846 in Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He never married and died without issue.

        11               x.   Henry Clay COBB was born about 1848 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He married and had six children but their names are unknown at this time.

        12               xi.   Myra Rebecca Ruth COBB.  She never married and died without issue.

 

 

SECOND GENERATION

 

2.   Elbert Sevier COBB was born on September 23, 1826 in Knox County, Tennessee.  He

appeared on the census in 1830 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  At that time he was the oldest child in the household of his parents and still unmarried.  He died in Muskogee, Indian Territory (now Muskogee County, Oklahoma).  He was married to Sarah TIPTON (daughter of John B. TIPTON and Louisiana WEAR) about 1859.  Elbert Sevier COBB and Sarah TIPTON had the following children:

3.  Joseph Benson COBB Sr was born on July 26, 1828 in Knox County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1830 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He relocated about 1862 to Bradley County, Tennessee.  He immigrated in February 1870 to Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died on March 22, 1896 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.  He was married to Evaline CLINGAN (daughter of Alexander Adams CLINGAN Sr and Martha J. "Patsy" BLYTHE) on December 15, 1857 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  Evaline CLINGAN was born on April 13, 1835 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  She was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  She died on November 17, 1918 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.  Joseph Benson COBB Sr and Evaline CLINGAN had the following children:

 

        20                i.   Isabel COBB was born on October 25, 1858 in Blount County, Tennessee.  She was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  She died in 1947 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  She never married and died without issue.  She was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.  She was a Physician in Indian Territory.  She was an 1892 graduate of the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  It is believed she was the first female physician in the Indian Territory.

        21                ii.   William Cowan "Billy" COBB was born on April 1, 1860 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He died in 1880 in Gibson Station, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died of wounds received in a shootout with cattle rustlers.  He was unmarried and left no issue.  He was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.

4.  Melinda Eufamia COBB was born on March 14, 1831 in Knox County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  On this enumeration she declared that she was born in Tennessee; her father in North Carolina; and her mother in Tennessee.  She died after 1881 in Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.  She was married to William Baker COWAN (son of Andrew COWAN and Esther F. "Effie" HOUSTON) on January 1, 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  The marriage records of Blount County clearly show that Melinda and William Cowan were married on 01 Jan 1850.  While the census taken in October of that year does show them both in the household of her parents, the manner in which they are listed would cause one to think they were not yet married.  William Baker COWAN was born about 1824 in Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He resided in 1862 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  On this enumeration he declared that he was born in Tennessee, his father in Virginia, and his mother in Tennessee.  He immigrated in 1881 to Denton County, Texas.  He died after 1881 in Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.  Melinda Eufamia COBB and William Baker COWAN had the following children:

        30               iv.   Thomas P. COWAN was born about 1871 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Bradley County, Tennessee.

        31               v.   William H. COWAN was born about 1873 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Bradley County, Tennessee.

        32               vi.   Jenny W. COWAN was born about 1875 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Bradley County, Tennessee.

 

5.  Calvin B. COBB was born on April 16, 1833 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  His name is illegible on this enumeration.  He died on June 16, 1900 in Denton County, Texas.  He was buried in Smith Cemetery, Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.  Although of military age, there is no record of his having served in any capacity during the War Between the States.  He was married to Julia H. HOWARD before 1870.  Calvin B. COBB and Julia H. HOWARD had the following children:

 

        33                i.   Allie M. COBB was born on August 24, 1870 in Tennessee.  She died on May 16, 1900 in Denton County, Texas.  She apparently died unmarried and without issue.  She was buried in Smith Cemetery, Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.

 

7.  Thomas Pervane COBB was born on August 31, 1837 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He immigrated in 1872 to Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Denton County, Texas.  He died on December 24, 1898 in Denton County, Texas.  He was buried in Smith Cemetery, Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.  It is possible he was the Thomas Cobb that served in Company K, 12th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union) during the War Between the States.  He was married to Mattie SMITH before 1880 in Texas or Tennessee.  Mattie SMITH was born on March 15, 1850 in Alabama.  In 1880, she declared her age to be 26, translating to a birth year of 1854.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Denton County, Texas.  On this enumeration she declared that she was born in Alabama, her father in South Carolina, and her mother in Georgia.  She died on January 26, 1910 in Denton County, Texas.  She was buried in Smith Cemetery, Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.

 

8.  Samuel Sylvester COBB was born on March 10, 1840 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He relocated before 1860 to Bradley County, Tennessee.  He died on June 11, 1923 in Craig County, Oklahoma.  During the War Between the States, he served as Captain of Company K, 5th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (Union).  Immediately after the war, he relocated to the Indian Territory.  He was married to Ellen VORE about 1865.  Ellen VORE was born about 1843.

 

9.  John Oliver COBB was born on June 4, 1842 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee.  He died on December 30, 1902.  It is possible he was the John O. Cobb that served in Company A, 10th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (Union) during the War Between the States.  He was married first to Eudora MOFFETT on May 14, 1869 in Webber Falls, Indian Territory (now Muskogee County, Oklahoma).  Eudora MOFFETT was born on September 1, 1851 in Charleston, Franklin County, Arkansas.  She died on May 30, 1881.  He was married second to Christine Erwin THOMAS after May 1881.  Christine Erwin THOMAS died in 1907 in Texas.

 

 

THIRD GENERATION

 

22.  Martha "Mattie" COBB was born on December 28, 1861 in Blount County, Tennessee.  She was married to Clement G. CLARK Sr on June 11, 1891 in Muskogee, Indian Territory (now Muskogee County, Oklahoma).  Martha "Mattie" COBB and Clement G. CLARK Sr had the following children:

23.  Joseph Benson "Joe" COBB Jr was born on February 21, 1863 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died in 1945 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was married to Lillie JOHNSON on January 18, 1893 in Muskogee, Indian Territory (now Muskogee County, Oklahoma).  Lillie JOHNSON was born in 1867.  She died in 1954 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  Joseph Benson "Joe" COBB Jr and Lillie JOHNSON had the following children:

24.  Alexander Clingan COBB was born on September 15, 1864 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died in 1950 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.  He was a Professor of Engineering.  He taught at Kansas A&M University, and later at Oklahoma State University.

 

He was married first to Lucy VAN ZILE on June 29, 1888 in Carthage, Ogle/Hancock County, Illinois.  Lucy VAN ZILE was born in 1863 in Ripley County, Indiana.  She died on March 31, 1893.  She was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.  Alexander Clingan COBB and Lucy VAN ZILE had the following children:

 

        42                i.   Gilbert Benson COBB was born about 1889.  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  At that time, he was still unmarried and living in his father's household.

He was married second to May "Lillie" PHARR on June 29, 1898.  May "Lillie" PHARR was born in 1867 in Lincoln County, Missouri.  She died in 1951 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner, County, Oklahoma.  Alexander Clingan COBB and May "Lillie" PHARR had the following children:

25.  Samuel Sylvester "Sam" COBB Sr was born on December 12, 1865 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died on October 11, 1947 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was married to Carrie K. HUNTER on May 4, 1892 in Riley County, Kansas.  Carrie K. HUNTER was born on November 17, 1869.  She died on April 24, 1945 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  Samuel Sylvester "Sam" COBB Sr and Carrie K. HUNTER had the following children:

COBB was born on November 2, 1897.  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died on September 6, 1982 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.

        51               iii.   Samuel S. COBB Jr was born on May 23, 1900.  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He died on January 28, 1991 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.

        52               iv.   Carolyn E. COBB was born about 1902.  She was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).

26.  Addie Melinda COBB was born on September 9, 1870 in Lone Prairie, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).  She was married to Terry PARKINSON on June 4, 1891 in Muskogee, Indian Territory (now Muskogee County, Oklahoma).  Addie Melinda COBB and Terry PARKINSON had the following children:

27.  Martha Evelyn COWAN was born on May 8, 1862 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Bradley County, Tennessee.  At that time, she was the oldest child listed in her parent's household.  She died on February 5, 1890 in Denton County, Texas.  She was buried in Smith Cemetery, Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.  She was married to C.K. SHEARIN.  It is known he was married previously, but his first wife's name is not known.  C.K. SHEARIN was born on March 19, 1849.  He died on April 8, 1921 in Denton County, Texas.  He was buried in Smith Cemetery, Lewisville, Denton County, Texas.

 

 

FOURTH GENERATION

 

39.  Joseph Benson COBB III was born on December 15, 1898 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He was listed on the Guion-Miller Roll, Eastern Cherokees residing West of the Mississippi River in 1906 in Wagoner, Indian Territory (now Wagoner County, Oklahoma).  He was married to Winnie R. CORGAN.  Joseph Benson COBB III and Winnie R. CORGAN had the following children:

63.  Joe Bates COBB was born on October 5, 1931.  He died on May 22, 1979 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.  He was married to Norma Joan CULPEPPER.  Joe Bates COBB and Norma Joan CULPEPPER had the following children:
