Benjamin M. Cobb

(c1771-1858)

1.  Benjamin M. COBB was born between 1771 and 1774 in Morris County, New Jersey.  He was the son of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Young who eventually settled in what is now Catawba County, North Carolina.  He immigrated about 1851 to Fannin County, Texas.  This relocation was made probably from Knox County, Tennessee.    He died on October 20, 1858 in Fannin County, Texas.  He was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  This cemetery is located near the Oak Hill community, north of Leonard in the southern half of the county.

[NOTE: Also buried in Grove Hill Cemetery is Elminia J. Cobb wife of F. W., born Apr 9, 1862 and died Aug 28, 1901.  She is not yet positively identified.]

He was married to Violetta MORRIS on October 6, 1790 in Surry County, North Carolina.  Of the six children produced from this marriage,  only James Milton Cobb migrated to Texas.  Violetta MORRIS was born in 1774.  She died on February 18, 1828 in Tennessee.  Benjamin M. COBB and Violetta MORRIS had the following children:

+2   i.          James Milton COBB (born about 1806).

SECOND GENERATION

2.  James Milton COBB was born about 1806 in North Carolina.  He was the son of Benjamin M. Cobb and Violetta Morris, and the grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Young.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Knox County, Tennessee.  He died between 1851 and 1860 in Texas (Fannin County probably).  He was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas (probably).  Since his wife and father, and three other family members are buried in the same cemetery it seems most likely that James is buried there also in an unmarked grave.

There seems to be disagreement among the descendants of Benjamin M. Cobb, concerning the fate of his son James Milton.  This is probably due to the lack of definitive documentation.  It is most likely that James did move to Texas, and that he died shortly after arrival.

The following is established:

I.     In 1850, he was living in Knox County, Tennessee

2.    His father Benjamin died in Fannin County, Texas in October 1858, at age 87.

3.    Fannin County court records show that in Mar 1859, James' wife Jane Helen Dickey already had legal guardianship of their remaining minor children.  This reveals that she had been awarded guardianship on a prior date in a Fannin County court.

4.    Jane (Dickey) Cobb is positively identified on the 1860 Fannin County census.

5.    The grave of Benjamin M. Cobb is marked, whereas that of James Milton is not.

The following seems to be logical:

I.     If James were already deceased before the move to Texas began about 1851, the move would have never taken place to begin with.  In 1851, the widow Jane would have been burdened with eight young children (the last one still a newborn) and James' eighty-year old father Benjamin.  Only one son Thomas was old enough to have been any help at all.

2.    If James had died anywhere along the way to Texas, it is my thinking that one of two posssible things would have happened.

     (a) Thinking it too difficult to finish the journey, Jane would have settled then and there, wherever the situation found them.

     (b) If not beyond "the point of no return", Jane would have turned them around and gone back home.

Pending the discovery of additional records, it is my opinion that James Milton Cobb died in Fannin County, Texas between Oct 1858 and Mar 1859.  I feel that he was still living when his father died, and was able to insure that a headstone was placed to mark the grave.  But when he died, the widow Jane was hard-strapped to provide her husband with a headstone.

James was married to Jane Helen DICKEY on September 11, 1828 in Knox County, Tennessee.  There were nine children produced from this marriage.  The two oldest, Clisby and Houston, did not come to Texas.  Jane Helen DICKEY was born about 1806 in Virginia.  She appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  At that time she was listed as the head of her own household, confirming that her husband was deceased.  She never remarried.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died on July 30, 1879 in Fannin County, Texas.  She was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  Following the death of her husband, Jane was given the legal guardianship of her minor children Elizabeth S. Cobb, Margaret M. Cobb, Sarah L. Cobb, Benjamin M. Cobb, Walton P. Cobb, and Ann L. Cobb.  Record of this was made in the Fannin County court in March 1859.  James Milton COBB and Jane Helen DICKEY had the following children:

+3   i.          Thomas Church COBB (born on January 21, 1832).

+4   ii.          Elizabeth S. COBB (born on April 26, 1835).

+5   iii.         Margaret Melinda "Mary" COBB (born on June 14, 1837).

+6   iv.         Sarah L. COBB (born on January 9, 1844).

              +7   v.         Benjamin M. COBB (born in April 1844).

+8   vi.         Walton P. COBB (born on July 30, 1848).

+9   vii.        Anne L. "Annie" COBB (born in May 1852).

[NOTE: It is further documented that Thomas Church Cobb had a grandson Marvin Cox who resided in Houston, Texas.  However, the identity of Marvin's mother is still not established.]
