Wilson H. “Doc” Cobb

(1842 Georgia-1908 Oklahoma)

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Wilson H. "Doc" COBB was born on March 8, 1842 in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia.  He was the nephew of Rowland Cobb, who settled in Fannin County in 1856.    He appeared on the census in 1850 in Gordon County, Georgia.  In 1854, he was named as a beneficiary of the estate of his grandfather John S. Cobb, in Pickens District, South Carolina.  He was named as being a minor child under the guardianship of George W. Eaton, whom his mother had married in January 1854, in Gordon County, Georgia.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fayette County, Alabama.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Henderson County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Anderson County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1900 in Grayson County, Texas.  He resided in 1903 in Delba, Fannin County, Texas.  He died on July 31, 1908 in Johnston County, Oklahoma.

In 1862, Wilson H. Cobb and brother Jefferson S. Cobb enlisted in Fayette County, as Privates in the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, for service during the War Between the States.  Cousin Kelsey Miller Cobb had enlisted in the same regiment and was killed in action at Seven Pines, Virginia, in late June 1862. Immediately on enlistment, Wilson and Jefferson were sent to Virginia as replacement recruits.  Soon afterwards Jefferson was wounded causing the amputation of several fingers from his right hand, an injury of the type that disqualified him from further infantry service.  He was reassigned to the Confederate Medical Department and finished the war assigned to the Military Hospital at Selma, Alabama. According to his military records, Wilson was occasionally plagued by an enlarged spleen, probably caused from untreated water, but served the entire remainder of the war with the 26th Alabama.

He was married to Martha Ellen TAYLOR between 1860 and 1862 in Fayette County, Alabama.  This date is calculated on the birth of the first known child of this marriage.  Martha Ellen TAYLOR was born in July 1845 in Alabama.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Fayette County, Alabama.  At that time she was the youngest child still remaining in her widowed mother's household, next door to Littleberry G. Taylor.  It is noteworthy that she was the only one of her siblings to be born in Alabama, further proof that her unknown father did at least move to that state.  Further, although ample evidence exists to prove her marriage to Wilson Cobb took place in Fayette County, she cannot be positively identified on the census for that county in 1860.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Henderson County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Anderson County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Grayson County, Texas.  For this enumeration, she declared she had given birth to some fifteen children.  Of that number, only six were still living in 1900.  She died on November 4, 1913 in Mount Olive, Mountain Springs community, Cooke County, Texas.  She was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Mountain Springs, Cooke County, Texas.  Wilson H. "Doc" COBB and Martha Ellen TAYLOR had the following children:

            +2              i.    George A. COBB (born on January 30, 1862).

+3             ii.    Dora A. COBB (born on December 9, 1864).

+4            iii.    Charles B. COBB (born on October 6, 1866).

+5           iv.    William Lucas Madison "Babe" COBB (born on September 5, 1868).

+6            v.    Sallie COBB (born in February 1874).

+7           vi.    Ollie Belle COBB (born on March 3, 1877).

8          vii.    Ada COBB was born about 1878 in Texas.  She died before 1900 in Texas or Indian Territory.

+9         viii.    Ida Rosetta COBB (born on February 14, 1881).

SECOND GENERATION

2.  George A. COBB was born on January 30, 1862 in Fayette County, Alabama.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Henderson County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Bowie County, Texas.  He was listed in the household of his first cousin, John G.L. Cuthbertson.  He died on October 29, 1884 in Bowie County, Texas.  He was buried in Rock Hill Cemetery, Bowie County, Texas.

He was married to Emma COLLINS between 1880 and 1882 in Texas (probably).  This date is calculated on the birth of the first known child of this marriage.  Emma COLLINS was born in December 1862 in Alabama.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Bowie County, Texas.  She was the oldest child listed in the household, and was listed as being sixteen years of age.  She died after November 1943 in Webster Parish, Louisiana (probably).  She was living in Webster Parish, Louisiana, in November 1943, when she gave a sworn deposition as to the facts of the birth of her daughter, Nellie Augusta Cobb Kemper, as part of the process of Nellie's application for a delayed birth certificate in Bowie County, Texas.  George A. COBB and Emma COLLINS had the following children:

                              i.    George Lee COBB was born on April 14, 1882 in Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1910 in Webster Parish, Louisiana.  Also listed in his household was one Willie Collins age 17, born Arkansas, as a cousin of George Cobb.  He obviously was a kinsman of George's mother Emma Collins.  He appeared on the census in 1920 in Webster Parish, Louisiana.  His occupation was listed as a sawmill worker.  At the time of his death, he was the retired owner of Cobb Lumber Company in Springhill, Louisiana.  He resided in 1936 in Heflin, Webster Parish, Louisiana.  (This information from son George Jr's application for license to marry Babetta Blum.)  He died on October 15, 1964 in Webster Parish, Louisiana.  He was buried in Springhill Cemetery, Webster Parish, Louisiana.

ii.    Nellie Augusta COBB was born on June 29, 1885 in Ingersoll (now Redwater), Bowie County, Texas.  Nellie obtained a delayed birth certificate in Bowie County on November 20, 1943, certificate #013582.  At that time she was living at Redwater.  Her mother, Mrs. R.J. (Emma) Elledge, was informant, and she was living in Webster Parish, Louisiana.  Another informant was an M.T. Browning (?).

3.  Dora A. COBB was born on December 9, 1864 in Fayette County, Alabama.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Henderson County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Anderson County, Texas.  She died on April 15, 1949 in Broken Arrow, Tulsa County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Park Grove Cemetery, Broken Arrow, Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

She was married to George Davis BEAVER on August 14, 1880 in Anderson County, Texas.  George Davis BEAVER was born on February 20, 1861 in Mississippi.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Anderson County, Texas.  He died on September 22, 1901 in Navarro County, Texas.  [NOTE: See comments for daughter Birdie Lea.]  He was buried in Dresden Cemetery, Navarro County, Texas.  [This cemetery is all that remains of the once thriving Dresden community.  It is located about fifteen miles west of Corsicana.]  Dora A. COBB and George Davis BEAVER had the following children:

                              i.    William Charles BEAVER was born on December 29, 1881 in Bell County, Texas.  He died on August 4, 1915 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.

ii.    Birdie Lea BEAVER was born on March 14, 1883 in Texas.  On an occasion in 1901, Birdie's husband Amos and her father George Beaver got into an argument.  Amos shot George with what was evidently a small caliber pistol.  The wound did not appear serious and George did not seek medical attention.  Predictably, gangrene set in and George died of the infection a few days later.  Amos was exonerated by the authorities apparently on grounds of self-defense.  However, the incident did destroy the relationship between Birdie and her mother. Following this, Birdie and Amos disappeared and all trace has been lost.

iii.    Frank BEAVER was born on February 1, 1885.  He died on March 12, 1930 in Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas.

iv.    Martha BEAVER was born in 1887 in Cass County, Texas.  Martha was very close to her mother and wrote her a large number of letters, which are now (1974) in the possession of Estelle Streator, daughter of Martha's sister, Ida Belle.  She died in 1915 in Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama.

                            v.    Fred Oliver BEAVER was born on March 4, 1893 in Anson, Jones County, Texas.  He died on March 12, 1942 in Paducah, Cottle County, Texas.  He was buried in Purdon Cemetery, Navarro County, Texas.

vi.    Ida Belle BEAVER was born on June 5, 1893 in Howe, Grayson County, Texas.  She died on March 3, 1972 in Collinsville, Tulsa County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

vii.    James Hardy "Jack" BEAVER was born on December 24, 1895 in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.  He died in 1987.

viii.    Samuel Marshall BEAVERS was born on December 14, 1897 in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.  He died on April 13, 1975 in Bridgeport, Wise County, Texas.  He was buried in East Bridgeport (City) Cemetery, Wise County, Texas.

Dora was married to Sam Henry MERONEY on November 6, 1907 in Van Zandt County, Texas.  There were no children produced from this marriage.  Sam Henry MERONEY was born on June 13, 1865 in Murphy, Cherokee County, North Carolina.  He died on March 7, 1955 in Broken Arrow, Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

4.  Charles B. COBB was born on October 6, 1866 in Fayette County, Alabama.  Charles was never definitely positive about his birth date.  He knew that he was born in Fayette County, Alabama, in the cool part of the year, the year after the War Between the States ended.  He simply 'adopted' the date of October 6, 1866.  However, a recently discovered letter written by his mother, Martha Ellen Taylor Cobb, in 1867, does indicate that Charles was indeed at least born in 1866.  One must remember that in the days immediately following the end of the war, it was a "hard scrabble" existence for southerners who had lost everything.  Keeping records of such things as birthdays was an extravagance when basic survival itself was foremost in the mind.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Henderson County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Anderson County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1900 in Grayson County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1910 in Grayson County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1920 in Cooke County, Texas.  He died on November 2, 1950 in Nocona, Montague County, Texas.  He was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Mountain Springs, Cooke County, Texas.  He was a farmer and lay Methodist preacher.  Following the death of his wife in 1939, Charles liquidated the entire home and contents, and spent the remainder of his life moving among his children.  At the time of his death, he was living with his daughter Pearl Cobb Tuley, in Nocona, Texas.

Charles was married to Susan Alice MANGUM on July 20, 1890 in Belton, Bell County, Texas.  At the time of their marriage, Susan was living with her sister Rachael Josephine and husband Frank Gibson in Bell County, Texas. Susan was the youngest child of her parents, and had been orphaned the year before when her mother Joanna Gatlin died.  Susan Alice MANGUM was born on January 13, 1874 in Gonzales County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in DeWitt County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Grayson County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1910 in Grayson County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1920 in Cooke County, Texas.  She died on November 22, 1939 in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas.  She was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Mountain Springs, Cooke County, Texas.  Charles B. COBB and Susan Alice MANGUM had the following children:

                              i.    "Infant Twins" COBB was born on October 8, 1901 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  These children were both stillborn.  They were buried in the City Cemetery, Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.

ii.    William Charles "Willie" COBB was born on January 30, 1892 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died on October 14, 1918 in Camp Travis, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.  William Charles Cobb was in the last group of Cooke County men to be called into military service for duty in World War One.  He left Cooke County in August 1918.  Six weeks later, in September 1918, he died of Influenza while in training in San Antonio.  He never saw his own son, Willie B., who was born in May 1919.  He was buried on October 17, 1918 in New Hope Cemetery, Mountain Springs, Cooke County, Texas.

iii.    Jesse Clarence COBB was born on February 7, 1893 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died on May 20, 1894 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He was buried in Van Alstyne (City) Cemetery, Grayson County, Texas.

iv.    Albert Jefferson COBB was born on November 10, 1894 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died on August 22, 1958 in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California.  He was buried in Mission City Memorial Park, Santa Clara, California.

                            v.    Iva Pearl COBB was born on April 11, 1896 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  She died on October 29, 1972 in Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas.  She was buried in Chillicothe Cemetery, Hardeman County, Texas.

vi.    Sidney Lawrence "Sid" COBB was born on January 27, 1899 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died on November 11, 1964 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.  He was buried in Laurel Land Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.

vii.    Floyd Chester "Kiddie" COBB was born on June 17, 1904 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died on November 14, 1987 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.  He was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Mountain Springs, Cooke County, Texas.  He was a farmer and self employed handyman.

viii.    Lillie Olene "Sis" COBB was born on October 22, 1907 in Collin County, Texas.  She died on February 12, 1990 in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas.  She was buried in Ralls Cemetery, Ralls, Crosby County, Texas.

ix.    Lester Ray Hugh "Bill" COBB was born on November 24, 1913 in Mount Olive, Mountain Springs community, Cooke County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1920 in Cooke County, Texas.  On this enumeration he was identified as "Hue" Cobb.  There is evidence to support the belief that his parents gave him the full name of Lester Ray Hugh Cobb.  However, he apparently dropped the "Hugh" as an adult and it never appears in any legal documents.  He died on December 11, 1989 in Smithfield, Tarrant County, Texas.  He was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Mountain Springs, Cooke County, Texas.  He was originally buried in Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery, in Tarrant County.  However, several years later family members moved his remains to New Hope Cemetery in Cooke County, near the place of his birth, and also the final resting place of so many of his immediate family.  He was a public relations and advertising specialist.

5.  William Lucas Madison "Babe" COBB was born on September 5, 1868 in Tennessee.  There is conflict concerning the location of his birth.  His birth certificate specifies he was born in Alabama.  However, a letter written by his mother in January 1867, now in the possession of  a Taylor descendant, gives clear evidence to conclude the Cobb family had moved to Henderson County, Tennessee, by the end of the year 1866.  He died on February 16, 1942 in Randlett, Cotton County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Randlett Cemetery, Cotton County, Oklahoma.  His grave was unmarked when last visited some years ago.  He was a Farmer.

He was married to Mary Rachel "Mintie" STANLEY on September 7, 1894 in Howe, Grayson County, Texas.  Mary Rachel "Mintie" STANLEY was born in 1874 in Arkansas.  She died on June 30, 1919 in Cheek, Carter County, Oklahoma.  William Lucas Madison "Babe" COBB and Mary Rachel "Mintie" STANLEY had the following children:

                              i.    Mae COBB was born on September 14, 1895 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  She died on August 28, 1936 in Causey, Roosevelt County, New Mexico.  She was buried in Causey (City) Cemetery, Roosevelt County, New Mexico.

ii.    George Sidney "Buke" COBB was born on June 7, 1897 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died on October 12, 1928 in Walters, Cotton County, Oklahoma.  He was buried in Randlett Cemetery, Cotton County, Oklahoma.  His grave was unmarked when last visited some years ago.

iii.    Ira Leslie COBB was born on January 9, 1902 in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.  He died in November 1984 in Burkburnett, Wichita County, Texas.

iv.    Jesse Clarence COBB was born on February 29, 1904 in Delba, Fannin County, Texas.  He died in June 1972 in Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas.

                            v.    Alma Mary Jane COBB was born on June 12, 1912 in Springer, Carter County, Oklahoma.

6.  Sallie COBB was born in February 1874 in Tennessee or Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Grayson County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1910 in Fisher County, Texas.  Sallie and Walter Snodgrass were living in Grayson County, Texas, at the time of the 1900 Federal census.  They relocated to Rotan, Fisher County, Texas, where they were enumerated on the 1910 census.  After this time, all trace of them was lost.

Recent contact with descendants has provided the following information.  In 1920, Sallie was living with a man named Nix, in Oklahoma City.  She had changed her name to Cleo Ruth, for some reason.  At some point after that, she lived with a man named Cruz. It is known that she was living with her son Emmette in Kansas City, in 1924.  It is believed she died during the 1930'-40's, somewhere in Oklahoma, north of Tulsa.
