FIRST GENERATION

  1. Rowland (Ballard ?) COBB was born on May 20, 1796 in Pendleton District, South Carolina.  He was the son of Rev. John S. Cobb and wife Frankie Smith of Pickens District, South Carolina.    He appeared on the census in 1820 in Pendleton District, South Carolina.  He appeared on the census in 1830 in Pickens District, South Carolina.  He appeared on the census in 1840 in Floyd County, Georgia.  He and his brother Andrew had moved their families there about 1836.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Gordon County, Georgia.  Rowland's brother Andrew died in 1844, in Floyd County, Georgia, leaving a widow and three small children.  Rowland took the widow Cobb 'under wing' and situated them next door to his own family, where they are found on the 1850 census of Gordon County, Georgia.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  In January of that same year, Rowland and wife Mary had become charter members of the First Baptist Church of Ladonia.  The church is located on Main Street, and was originally constructed of timber hauled by Oxen from Jefferson, Texas, a hundred miles to the East.  The members had to sit on split log benches inside the structure until October 1865, when pews were built by “Hyman Cobb” (probably their son Thaddeus Hiram) for the price of $1.00 or $00.50, depending on the length of the pew.  He died on August 26, 1867 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.  He was buried in Ladonia (City) Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.

An interesting story has been passed down concerning Rowland Cobb, that is one of the very few times in my forty years of genealogical research experience that has turned out to be supported by documentary evidence.  Combining lore with fact the story goes as follows.

Rowland and his brother Andrew married sisters; Mary Ann and Lavenia Edwards, respectively.  Andrew died in October 1844 in Floyd County, Georgia, leaving Lavenia with yet three small children.  Rowland then took the widow Cobb 'under wing' and situated them next door to his own family, where they are found on the 1850 census for Gordon County, Georgia.  Also listed in Rowland's household was the twice-widowed mother of the Edwards sisters, Elizabeth Miller Edwards Morgan.  Lavenia remarried, to George W. Eaton in Gordon County in January 1854.

When the move to Texas was made in 1856 from Georgia, the original party was composed of both families, the Cobbs and the Eaton’s.  This large group did not complete the move intact.  The Eaton’s (with Elizabeth Morgan) dropped out in Fayette County, Alabama; as did also one of Rowland's sons John L. Cobb.  These people can be found on the 1860 Fayette census.  Another of Rowland's sons, Warren, dropped out in Sevier County, Arkansas, where he and his wife died the following year.

Several years pass by.  By 1860, Rowland's family was well established in Fannin County, Texas.  By that year only the youngest of Rowland's children, Rufus, was still living at home.  The rest had all married and started their own families.  Then the War Between the States began.

According to family legend, Rowland and his wife Mary Ann became concerned for the relatives they had left back in Alabama.  Rowland and his sons Kelsey and Rufus journeyed back to Fayette County, to take care of their relations there.  Kelsey had apparently also made his intentions known to offer his military service to the Confederacy, and his wife Elvira preferred to stay with her family in Georgia while he was away.  After depositing her and their children in Georgia, Kelsey returned to Fayette County, where he filed his Will and then enlisted in Company C, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, in March 1862.  He was immediately ordered to Virginia, where he was killed in action on June 28 of that same year.

Back in Fayette County, the war also took its toll.  Before 1865, George Eaton and Elizabeth Morgan had both died, as had Rowland's young son Rufus.  It is known that Lavenia survived the war and lived for a time with one of her sons, Albert P. Cobb, in St. Clair County, Alabama.  However, she was apparently also deceased by 1870.  Lavenia's remaining children, both sons, had also joined the same 26th Alabama Regiment and were themselves away to the war.

According to legend, Rowland returned to Fannin County when the war ended.  He was possibly accompanied by Kelsey's widow and children.  It is known that Elvira did return to Fannin, as the oldest daughter married there in 1878.  Rowland died in Fannin County in 1867, and is buried in Ladonia next to his wife Mary Ann.

There is no hard documentation to verify that Rowland himself returned to Alabama.  However, there is proof of every other part of the story.  And it would seem unlikely that Kelsey's widow would have attempted to journey back to Texas from Georgia, in those hard times, with small children in tow, if she had not had a family male escort.

Rowland was married to Mary Ann EDWARDS on March 18, 1817 in Pickens District, South Carolina.  This was a case of brothers marrying sisters.  Rowland's brother Rev. Andrew Ambrose Cobb married Lavenia Edwards, sister of Rowland's wife Mary Ann Edwards.

Mary Ann EDWARDS was born on June 4, 1803 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina.  She was mentioned in the Will of her grandfather John Miller, dated May 16, 1807.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Gordon County, Georgia.  She appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died on March 13, 1889 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.  She was buried in Ladonia (City) Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  Rowland (Ballard ?)             12              xi.   Rufus Cincinnatus COBB was born on May 29, 1847 in Georgia.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  At that time he was the only child remaining in his parents home.  He died on February 4, 1864 in Fayette County, Alabama.  According to family legend, Rufus accompanied his father Rowland and brother Kelsey, when they returned to Fayette County, following the opening of the War Between the States.  He was buried in Kennedy, Fayette (now Lamar) County, Alabama.

His residence was at Ladonia Post Office.  He signed a will in 1862 in Fayette County, Alabama.  He died on June 28, 1862 in Virginia.

This researcher will be the first to confess that experience has jaded me against ever accepting oral family legend without a grain of salt.  In the case of Kelsey M. Cobb, recorded documentation will not make any sense whatsoever unless you do give at least some credence to un-documentable tradition and combine that with what you can prove.

It is believed that when Kelsey's parents moved to Texas in 1856 from Georgia, the party was initially composed of the families of Rowland Cobb and that of his wife's sister Lavenia (the widow of Rowland's brother Andrew Ambrose Cobb).  Andrew Cobb had died in 1844, and Lavenia had remarried some ten years later to George W. Eaton.

It is known that the combined party did not complete the move to Texas intact.  The Eaton party dropped out in Fayette County, Alabama, along with one of Rowland's sons John L. Cobb.  Both of these families can be found on the 1860 census for Fayette County.  Another of Rowland's sons Warren dropped out in Sevier County, Arkansas, and died there in 1857.

Kelsey did of course complete the move to Texas.  By 1860, he was married and had two small children with a third on the way.  When the War Between the States began, according to legend, his parents were concerned for their relatives back in Alabama.  According to legend, Rowland and sons Kelsey and Rufus returned to Fayette County.  Also, Kelsey apparently intended to offer his military service to the Confederacy, and his wife had the desire to return to her family in Georgia while he was away.

It cannot be proven that the elder Rowland Cobb returned to Alabama, but there is documentation to show that Kelsey and brother Rufus did.  Rufus died in Fayette County, Alabama in 1864, and his grave has been located there.  It can also be shown that Kelsey's wife did in fact return to her family in Georgia.

Apparently after leaving his wife in Georgia, Kelsey returned to Fayette County, where he filed his Will and then enlisted in Company C, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment in March 1862.  He was immediately ordered to Virginia.  On June 28, 1862, Kelsey was killed in action, probably in the series of engagements known as The Seven Days Battle, fought near Richmond, the last week of June 1862, immediately after Robert E. Lee had assumed command of The Army of Northern Virginia.  As late as 1933, a letter was still in family possession, sent by one of Kelsey's comrades to his family advising them of his death.  I have a partial transcription of that letter, detailing that Kelsey was shot through the Heart and died immediately.  Then later that night his comrades returned and buried him where he fell after wrapping him in his own blanket.

An exhaustive search has failed to produce an official military service record for Kelsey.  It is presumed that the reason for this is that he lived for such a short time after enlisting.  However, a single index card in the Alabama Department of Archives and History states that his widow filed a claim for his unpaid military wages due him at the time of his death.  The claim was initiated from Calhoun County, Georgia.  The card does specify the unit in which Kelsey served and the date of his death.  And the claim being made by his widow in Georgia, does verify that she had returned to her family there.

According to legend, Rowland Cobb returned to Fannin County after the war.  He may have had as company the widow and children of his son Kelsey M. Cobb.  It is known that Elvira did return to Fannin County, as the oldest child by her marriage to Kelsey married in Fannin in 1878.

Kelsey Miller Cobb was probably the only legal resident of Fannin County, Texas to originally enlist in a non-Texas unit during the war, and to be killed in action in Virginia.  Of all the units formed in Fannin County, all were either assigned to the Army of Tennessee, or to the Trans-Mississippi Department.  None were ever assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia.

I will also point out that in the same Company C, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, was one Wilson H. Cobb, a cousin of Kelsey.  He was the son of Andrew and Lavenia Edwards Cobb Eaton, and one of the Alabama relatives Rowland Cobb and wife Mary Edwards were concerned about to begin with.  Wilson had married just before the war started.  He survived the conflict, fathered fifteen children, and eventually moved to Fannin County, himself.  It was a small world then, too.

Kelsey was married to Elvira E. LOVE on May 24, 1856 in Whitfield County, Georgia.  Kelsey Miller COBB and Elvira E. LOVE had the following children:

40                i.   Martha L. "Mattie" COBB was born on October 7, 1857 in Fannin County, Texas.

41               ii.   William H. COBB was born in September 1859 in Fannin County, Texas.

42              iii.   Mary A. COBB was born about 1862 in Georgia.

    11.  William Henry COBB was born on January 8, 1839 in Calhoun County, Georgia.  (More likely he was born in Floyd County, Georgia.)  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Gordon County, Georgia.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  His residence was at Bonham Post Office.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  He signed a will on April 2, 1895 in Fannin County, Texas.  At his death, William Cobb had amassed a substantial estate, estimated at the time to be worth some $50,000, involving well over a thousand acres of land situated in several different tracts, as well as significant liquid assets.  This in additional consideration of the fact that he was married three times and fathered some fifteen children (thirteen of which survived him), his estate was very complex.  His son Jasper N. Cobb, nephew John H. Cobb, and friend D.E. Waggoner were appointed executors.  He died on December 7, 1895 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.  He was buried in Rehobeth Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  Although well maintained, this cemetery is still in an isolated rural location.  As a result it has been seriously vandalized.  In Jun 2001, the only headstone of a person related to our family that could be positively identified was that of Sarah Terry, William Cobb's first wife.

During the War Between the States he served in the 22d Texas Cavalry (aka 1st Indian-Texas) Regiment.  This unit was composed of volunteers from both Texas and the Indian Territory.  It is not to be mistaken that the assigned personnel were native-American.

He was married to Fannie Eliza WOODWARD on August 25, 1874 in Fannin County, Texas.  This event was recorded in Marriage Book C, pp 47, Fannin County, Texas.  In Sep 1877, Cobb and Eliza petitioned the Fannin County court to have Cobb named as the legal guardian of Conyer Fuller, Eliza's daughter by her marriage to Joel Conyers Fuller.  The motion was granted.  Following Eliza's death not quite two years later, some discord apparently arose among her relatives concerning Cobb's continued guardianship of the child.  The matter was resolved in court with Cobb being sustained as the guardian.  He continued making regular reports to the court concerning the child's welfare all the way up to Jan 1893, when he reported she had come of age.

Fannie Eliza WOODWARD was born on September 3, 1843.  She died on February 8, 1879 in Fannin County, Texas.  She was buried in Rehobeth Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  William Henry COBB and Fannie Eliza WOODWARD had the following children:

43                i.   Lizzie COBB was born between 1875 and 1877 in Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died after 1895.  She was a benefactor of her father's 1895 Will.

44               ii.   Ella COBB was born about 1879 in Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died after 1895.  She was a benefactor of her father's 1895 Will.

He was married to Sarah A. TERRY (daughter of Ansalem L. TERRY and Rebecca WAGGONER) on March 18, 1858 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.  This event was recorded in Marriage Book A, pp187, Fannin County, Texas.  Sarah A. TERRY was born on September 23, 1837 in Illinois.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died on May 25, 1874 in Fannin County, Texas.  Her death was probably caused by childbirth complications.  Her husband remarried several months later.  She was buried in Rehobeth Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  [NOTE: Jun 2001.  Due to cemetery vandalism, hers is the only Cobb grave that can be identified.  She is buried with her father's family.]  William Henry COBB and Sarah A. TERRY had the following children:

+45                i.   Jasper Newton COBB (born on July 30, 1859).

+46               ii.   Allen Alexander COBB (born on December 19, 1860).

47              iii.   Martha COBB was born in 1863.  As she was not named in her father's Will, she apparently died young and without issue.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.

+48              iv.   Roland COBB (born in 1865).

+49               v.   James Monroe COBB (born in 1866).

+50              vi.   Fanny L. COBB (born on August 18, 1869).

+51             vii.   Lucy Elvira COBB (born on January 27, 1871).

+52            viii.   Sally Ann COBB (born on May 15, 1872).

+53              ix.   Mattie COBB (born in 1874).

He was married to Sallie E. GAINES on May 18, 1879 in Fannin County, Texas.  This event was recorded in Marriage Book C, pp 608, Fannin County, Texas.  Sallie E. GAINES was born about 1858 in Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died after 1895.  According to the terms of her husband's 1895 Will, she was appointed Guardian of their four minor children.

William Henry COBB and Sallie E. GAINES had the following children:
