During the War Between the States he served as Captain of Company H, 9th Texas Infantry Regiment. In his later years he was a Confederate pensioner from the State of Texas, and at the time of his death was a resident in the Texas Confederate Veteran's Home in Austin.

In 1861 he enlisted in Co, H. 9th TX inf., confederate arem, and fought at Shilow, Perrysville, Murfreesboro, Vicksburg, Jackson and at several othre points, in hard contested battles.

My grgrandfather was William Howell, married to Miriam Vandever, no dates on either. I believe they were from Tennessee, possibly Madison Co., in the 1850's. My grandfather, John Howell Cobb, Sr. was born in 1859, probably in Tennessee and died 5Oct1922 in Fannin Co., Tx. No info on any of his siblings. Would appreciate any information on their ancestors. E-mail is eddcooakhill@aol.com. Ed Cobb
Hey Gang,

Let's start off the New Year right --- let's play Genealogy Detective.

The name of this game is "Who was William Hamilton Cobb".

********** In 1889, one William Hamilton Cobb of Fannin County, Texas, gave
an interview for what was published in "The Biographical Souvenir of Texas".
He declared that he was born 08 Aug 1834 in Tennessee, and that he came to
Texas at age seventeen (abt 1851). Paraphrasing, he stated his father
George was born abt 1810 in TN, and died in GA in 1853, that he was a
Carpenter by trade. Wm stated that his mother was Susan Amos, dau of John
Amos. She was born in NC abt 1811 and died in TX in 1868. William also
declared that his father George Cobb was the son of one Robert Cobb who was
a veteran of the War of 1812.**********

Lyn --- Your database shows that (the infamous) Clisby Cobb had a son
Robert, born 1770 in NJ and died abt 1850 in Polk Co, TN.

The 1840 census of Polk Co, TN shows a Robert Cobb and a John F. Amos. The
1850 census shows Robert Cobb and a John Cobb (probably a son that had
started his own household). There were no families named Amos in Polk Co in
1850. I've only seen the Index to these two census reports so do not have
the rundown on the whole family.

Polk Co, Tennessee was created in 1839, from Bradley and McMinn counties.
(1) It is documented that George Cobb and Susan Amos married in McMinn Co on
12 Aug 1829.
(2) Both Polk and Bradley counties border the state of Georgia.

--- Break ---

Now, let's jump over to Dade County, Georgia. Dade borders the state of
Tennessee. Dade County was created from Walker. Walker County was created
in 1833 from Murray, and included all the land that would become Dade
(1837), Chattooga (1838), Catoosa (1853), and Whitfield (1859). In short,
at one time Walker Co, GA bordered both Bradley and Polk County, TN.

The 1850 census for Dade Co, GA shows the family of:
George Cobb born 1811 NC
Susannah 1812 NC
Mary Ann 1833 TN
William 1835 TN
John 1837 TN
Nancy 1839 TN
Lafayette 1840 TN
Robert 1843 TN
George 1845 TN
James 1848 TN

I do not have a complete census report for Dade in 1850, but ---

From Dade Co, GA one Elbert D. Amos applied for a Confederate pension. He
declared he was born 27 Sep 1837 in Bradley Co, TN. He died 26 Nov 1910 in
Dade Co. His widow was Sarah Amos who also received a CSA pension. She
declared they were married 05 July 1865 in Dade Co. She also died Nov 1910
in Dade Co. This seems to show that the (only) Amos family of Polk-Bradley
county, TN moved to Dade Co, GA (right next door).

Continuing, in 1903, one Henry W. Thomas published "History of the
Doles-Cook Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA". This work shows that
Lafayette Cobb, Robert Cobb (refer to the census report above), and M.F.
Amos all three enlisted on 02 July 1861 in Dade Co. in Company H, 21st GA
Infantry Regiment. Further, at the time of publication (1903), both
Lafayette and Robert Cobb were listed as living in Texas. (This is not
quite correct as Lafayette died in TX in 1900. The author probably gathered
his information from veterans that were still living in GA, and did not yet
know that Lafayette had died.)

Lafayette L. Cobb is found on the 1870 census for Dade Co, GA. He is found
on the 1880 census for Fannin Co, TX. From the birth information of his
children, it is apparent he moved to TX between 1875-1880.

From all that you've seen thus far, my hypothesis is that:

(1) Wm Hamilton Cobb of Fannin Co, TX was the same William Cobb found in
George Cobb's household in 1850 in Dade Co, GA.

(2) Lafayette L. Cobb and Robert Cobb were in fact brothers of Wm Hamilton
Cobb.

(3) That the father of Wm Hamilton Cobb was in fact the George Cobb found on
the 1850 Dade GA census.

(4) That Susannah, wife of George Cobb on the 1850 Dade census was "Susan"
Amos, daughter of the John F. Amos, found on the 1840 census for Polk Co,
TN.

(5) That the George Cobb of 1850 Dade Co, GA was the son of the Robert Cobb
found on the 1840 and 1850 census of Polk Co, Tn.

(6) That the Robert Cobb found on the census of Polk County, TN was the son
of Clisby Cobb per Lyn's database.

--- Break ---

Supporting Evidence: We already know that another son of Clisby Cobb came
to Texas, at about the same time as William Hamilton Cobb. This was
Benjamin M. Cobb who died in Fannin County in 1858. He was already about 80
years old in 1850, and probably came with his son James Milton Cobb, and a
nephew Thomas Church Cobb (son of Archibald, Benjamin's brother).

We know that other descendant elements of Clisby Cobb immigrated to Texas
and the Indian Territory after the Civil War. Sylvester Young Cobb (another
son of Archibald) lived and died in TN. However, at least six of his twelve
known children ended up in either TX or the Indian Territory:

(1) Joseph Benson Cobb (the 1st) left TN in 1870. He died in what is now
Wagoner Co, OK.
(2) Elbert Sevier Cobb died in what is now Muscogee Co, OK.
(3) Samuel Sylvester died in what is now Craig Co, OK.
(4) Melinda Eufamia Cobb md William B. Cowan and died in Denton Co, TX. The
name Cowan was quite prominent in the same area of TN, and also later in
Fannin Co, TX.
(5) Calvin B. Cobb died in Denton Co, TX.
(5) Thomas Pervane Cobb died in Denton Co, TX.

*** NOTE: Denton Co, TX was created from Fannin Co, and they are now
separated by only one other county. ***

The GenWeb sites for both Bradley Co, TN and Wagoner Co, OK have a link to a
letter now in the Oklahoma state archives written by a daughter of Joseph
Benson Cobb in her later years. There is far too much in that letter to
quote it here, so I will just hit several high spots.

(1) She makes several references to the Cobbs, Cowans, and Clingan families
and explains their indian heritage through a Clingan-Blythe marriage back in
TN.

(2) She names three of her father's brothers: Tom, William C., and Henry C.
and stated that they lived in Red Clay, GA. This is in Whitfield County.
Reminder: Both Whitfield and Dade counties were created from Walker Co,
which adjoined both Bradley and Polk, TN. The tone of her letter creates a
mindset of "our next door neighbors, over in the next state".

(2) She stated that her father was influenced in his decision to move to
Texas, by the fact that other family members had come here years before and
written back glowing accounts of the state.

(3) She also declared that their family made the move to Texas, from Bradley
Co, TN. Doing a little checking, it appears that they moved to Bradley from
Blount Co, during the Civil War years.

---------- So, there it is. What do the two of you think about my
hypothesis? With the next update of "Cobb and Cobbs", I will be activating
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/spc/fantx/fannin_index.h tm.
Familiarize yourselves with it. I think I already need to do some editing.

Get back to me with your thoughts as soon as possible, okay?

Mike Cobb
