One census listed him as 60 and born 1790 in NC, next one said age 60 and born 1800. Same family otherwise. This son Tilman may be a clue.

I've merged 4 Jesse Cobbs from the Edgefield Co SC area that I had in my database since they seem to be born in the same time frame, 1770-1790. I dont have a real dob for him and this is all speculation.I have two sets of parents for this man at the moment. I do not know if Samuel was his father or who but it's possible that his mother was the Zelpha Cobb. If he was born ca 1770 he would be old enough in 1792 to get the land.

Bk 9 p 449-451: 2 Nov 1792 Edgefield Co, SC, Joseph THOMAS planter to Zelpha COBB on behalf of her son Jesse all of Edgefield Co, 20 pounds, 50 acres between Stevens and Turkey Creeks part of 100 acres which was part of 305 acres granted in 1775 to Sanford Keziah which was sold to William THOMAS sworn to before Hugh MIDDLETON on 3 Jun 1794.

Could this be the right Jesse?

From "Histories of Greene County, Illinois Its Past and Present". 1879. pg 569:
L. E. Cobb was born in Burke County, North Carolina, 24 February 1810. At the youthful age of 19, he set out for the State of Indiana, on foot. The distance, 500 miles, was made on foot, not over a broad level prairie, like many who settlled in the West in an early day, but on his way, which comprised considerable of the distance, he crossed the range of mountains known as the Blue Ridge, in North Carolina, and Clinch and Cumberland. The long distance was traversed in 12 days, giving the reader some idea of the strength of character and indomitable will of the hardy pioneer who will soon be known only in history. Arriving in Indiana, mr. Cobb secured employment in a tannery, also worked as a farm hand; first entered Illinois in 1832; worked for a blacksmith two weeks, receiving $5.00 therefore, his bed at night, a puncheon floor; his covering, deer skins; a life made up of a variety, surely.
Becoming proprietor of a small tannery, he earned his first $100.00, and purchased 80 acres in Macoupin County. In Morgan County, he married Miss Mary Crum, daughter of Mathias Crum, a native of Virginia. In 1852 he disposed of his property there and came to Greene County where he bought a valuable tract of land, part of which now lies in the corporation of Roodhouse. There are 7 children: Joseph, William, John, James, Mary, Margaret and Fanny.

My Cobb line is John Jackson Cobb born.ca 1816 in N.C. married Elizabeth
Hutchison 21 Sept. 1839 in Lincoln Co.,N.C. Moved to Cass Co.Ga. then to
Ms. needs his parents.

On a visit to Lincoln Co.,N. C. several years ago
I found the following Cobb info. I thought this
could help someone. This was in DEED BOOK
40 page292-293

Known all men by these presents that we
LEANDER E. COBB of McCouplin Co.,
and John C. Cobb of Morgan Co,Ill. have
appointed Wm.W. Cobb of Lincoln Co.,N.C.
power of Attorney to sell all right, title, interest
which we are entitled from our father William Cobb. Feb. 22 1844

Caleb R. Cobb of state of Alabama county Coosa 27 Dec. 1843 appoint
William W. Cobb
of Lincoln Co.,N.C. the land and etc. due me from my father William
Cobb.

Okay, here is my story of L. E. COBB and I will stick to it. There might be more Leanders than you know of or mine was beamed down by Scotty in 1810.

LEANDER ERVIN, aka ....L. E. COBB - retired farmer, L. E. COBB was born in Burke Co., NC, Feb. 24, 1810. At the youthful age of nineteen, he set out for the the State of Indiana on
foot. The distance, 500 miles was made on foot not over a broad level prairie, like many who settled in the West in an early day, but on his way, which comprised considerable of the distance, he crossed the range of mountains known as the Blue Ridge.

..... In Morgan Co., IL married Miss Mary Ann Crum, daughter of Mathais Crum, a native of Virginia. In 1852, he disposed of his property there and came to Greene Co., IL, where he bought a valuable tract of land, part of which now lies in the corporation of Roodhouse.

The 1860 Greene Co., IL census shows:

L. E. COBB 50 North Carolina
Mary 50 Indiana
Mary J. 20 Illinois
Fanny C. 15 Illinois
James 13 Illinois
John Crum 21 Illinois
Joseph Robertson 21 Illinois

John COBB 22 Illinois
Lzetha (s/b Siotha) 21 Illinois
Charles (Oscar) 1 Illinois

I am discontinuing on the COBB hunt and returning to my HUGOs. COBB is a
name I get involved with a "wall" hits me in the head. My count has
increased only because of my writings to the different counties historical
societies. My stray line of COBBs must have come in on space ships and
assumed the common names of the day.

I am unsubscribing from the COBB list. Like I said, I was satisfied that I am related to the Oklahoma person who said that I was not. I proved it to me, and that is all that I wanted to do. I don't care what he thinks. I have it in writing.
