Emory Cobb (August 20, 1831 - April 14, 1910) was a Kankakee area entepreneur and philanthropist who helped shape much of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Kankakee City. His acheivements include the creation of the city's Arcade Building and opera house, implementation of the trolley system and was one of the founders and managers of First National Bank. He is also popularly cited as the inventor of Western Union's money-wiring system.
Emory Cobb was born in Dryden, New York, to William and Achsah Cobb on August 20th, 1831. William was a long-standing farmer in the area, though he also operated several mills within the Dryden County area. Emory lived with his parents in Dryden until his father died. The eleven-year-old was then sent to live with his maternal grandfather, Lemi Bradley, in Northville, New York. In 1847, at the age of 16, he went to Ithica to learn telegraphy. The following year, secured a job on the newly-constructed Erie-Michigan telegraph line.
