RESEARCH NOTES for the Subject INDIVIDUAL above
[6688]
some had him listed as Andrew A.
Andrew and his two brothers, Robert, Jr., and Roland, all served in the
same unit in the civil war, and all three became Baptist ministers
afterward. Robert Jr. and Roland remained in SC, but Andrew moved to GA
around 1885 where he resided until his death in 1913. He served as pastor
for at least six different churches in three different counties in
northeast GA.
Andrew is the sixth and last child of Robert Cobb and Nancy Adams of Pickens, SC. Robert and Nancy apparently were never formally married and Nancy did not take the Cobb name until sometime after Robert's death which occurred in 1850 prior to the date of the census for that year. The family is listed under ADAMS in the 1850 Pickens District census living next door to John C. Cobb, an older half-brother to Andrew. Specifically, here are the census entries I have found:
1850 Census, Western Division, Pickens District SC, 10/16/1850, p. 418,
Entry 694, Family 729.
ADAMS, Nancy 46 + children: Caroline 16, Maria 14, Robert 12, Martha 11,
Roland 8, Andrew 4. All born SC.
1860 Census, 2nd Regimental District, Whetstone P.O., Pickens Co. SC,
7/12/1860, p. 68, Entry 1036, Family 1036.
COBB, Robert 21 farmer Real Estate $1000/ Pers. Prop. $450 / b. SC
------- , Susan 20
------- , Mariah 1 (listed incorrectly as male)
Nancy ADAM (sic) 35 (this age and spelling also incorrect)
Roland 14
Andy 12
(2) Andrew apparently joined his brother in the CSA, and served in the same regiment from 1863-1865. He was present at Appomatox, mustered out after the surrender, and returned to SC. Sometime between 1863 - 1866 Andrew married (Sarah) Elizabeth Todd, and their first child, my grandfather, Robert Lee Cobb, was born in (I think) Oconee Co. SC around 1866. The family appears on the 1870 census for Oconee County SC living next to his brother Roland. Nancy Adams (now Cobb) is also living with them. Specifically, the entries are:
1870 Census, Tugalo Twp. Oconee Co., SC, Walhalla P. O. (12 Aug 1870), p. 29.
Dwelling 5, Family 6:
COBB, Roling (aka Roland) 28 farmer $500/$230 all b. SC (Andrew's
older bro.)
(noted erroneously as female, also on census index the same way)
--------, Mary E. 29 wife keeping house / SC
--------, Ed. H. 2 male SC
--------, Wm. R. 1 male SC
Dwelling 6, Family 7 (Roland and Andrew's mother)
COBB, Nancy 70
Dwelling 6, Family 8 (Note: Nancy is living in same house as Andrew)
COBB, Andrew 24 farm laborer SC
--------, Elizabeth 25 SC
--------, Robert L. 4 SC
--------, John C. 2 SC
1880 Census, Pickens Co., Hurricane Twp., p. 84, Entry #239.
COBB, Andrew 33 Shoemaker all b. SC
--------, Elizabeth 32
--------, Robert 12
--------, John 11
--------, Forester 8
--------, Neoma (sic) 6 (Naomi/Nae)
--------, Evalina 4 (Evie)
--------, Bedee E. (f) 2 (Bead/Beadie)
The family moved to Franklin County GA sometime in the 1880's where Andrew became minister of the Liberty Baptist Church near Carnesville around 1888. Andrew's first son, my grandfather, Robert L. Cobb married Clarkie Burgess in Franklin County GA in 1887.
The 1890 census is, of course, missing, but the 1900 entry is as follows:
1900 Census, Banks County, GA, Washington District. (Vol. 2, ED 5, Sheet
15, line 43)
COBB, Andrew J. (b. Feb 1834 SC) ( A clear error on DOB; numerals may be
reversed)
--------, Sarah E. (wife) b. July 1843 SC (Presumably Sarah Elizabeth Todd)
--------, Vester J. (dau) b. Aug 1884 SC
--------, Lula R. (dau) b. Sep 1887 GA
--------, Liza E. (dau) b. May 1890 GA
--------, Arthur B. (grandson) b. May 1899 GA
Notes: (1) Andrew is known to have served as pastor for Leatherwood Baptist and Silver Shoals Baptist Churches in Banks County, GA around 1890 - 1900. (2) The 1900 census entry also includes the following info:
"married 37 yrs, 11 children, 8 alive, farmer, renting". I have been able to identify only 9 children, but his oldest child, Robert L., died in Jan. 1900 prior to this census, so this would leave 8 consistent with the census entry. (3) I cannot identify the parents of grandson Arthur B. He is not a child of the known male children, Robert, John, or Forester. This would
suggest another male child not listed above. (4) The inferred marriage date of 1863 seems a bit early for Andrew who probably was born in 1846.
Need info on this marriage.
1910 Census, Jackson County, GA, Commerce City, Minish Precinct. ED 104, Sheet 13, Ward 3. (Enumerated with Liza Farabee, daughter)
Dwelling 16, Family 21
FARABEE, Liza (HOH) f 21 widowed own income/own house 1child, 1 alive
(b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. SC)
--------------, Lee m 3 GA/GA/GA
COBB, Andrew J. (widower) 65 SC/SC/SC
Dwelling 16, Family 22
DAVID, Isaac 67 laborer, odd jobs renting GA/GA/GA
---------, Lizzie 61 md. 38 yrs, 3 ch GA/GA/GA
Notes: Andrew died in 1913 at the home of his daughter in Commerce, GA where he was living at the time. He is buried in the city cemetery in Commerce, GA. His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1903 and is reportedly buried at the Silver Shoals Baptist Church in Banks Co. GA where Andrew was pastor at the time.
Tom Cobb
Bowling Green, OH
From 1863-65 Andrew served with his brother, Robert Jr., in the 2nd SC Rifles Co. C in the Civil War, and he returned to SC to start his own family after the war. Sometime in the late 1800's he became a Baptist minister and moved to NE GA around 1885 where he pastored several churches in Franklin, Habersham, Jackson, and Banks Counties.
The DOB's of the children would seem to place Andrew's migration to GA
>around 1885, presumably to assume pastorship of a church. He is reported
>to have served as pastor for several Baptist churches in NE GA in the late
>1800's and early 1900's, namely:
>
> Liberty Baptist Church, Carnesville (Franklin Co.) GA, 1888
> Leatherwood Baptist Church, Banks Co. GA, ~1890
> B. C. Grant, Bapt. Church, Habersham Co. GA, 1896-99; 1904-06
> Hazel Creek Gaptist Church, Habersham Co. GA
> Level Grove Baptist Church, Cornelia (Habersham Co.) GA
> Silver Shoals Baptist Church, Homer (Banks Co.) GA, ~1903
