About a year ago (out of sheer frustration) I started a separate database on Cobb and related families from the Lincoln-Rutherford-Cleveland-Gaston-Catawba county area of North Carolina. At that time, it had become crystal clear to me that more than one Cobb family line was there. Now I can tell you that at least four of the major Cobb family groups that immigrated to America, were at one time or another represented in this one geographic area.

Concerning the William Cobb born 1765 that was the son of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb of Lincoln Co. While the county marriage records are illegible, his estate papers and the family bible of one of his descendants establishes his wife's identity as being Mary "Polly" Abernathy. And since Charles Abernathy (husband of William's sister Barbara) was the bondsman for the marriage, this would coincide.

William was in Lincoln Co as late as 1820. He did join one of the Bollinger wagon trains, and migrated to Cape Girardeau Co, MO where he died in July 1833.

Until recently, I had believed that the William Cobb that married Martha Harmon was the son of the William, above, and grandson of Ambrose and Sarah. However, the Cape Girardeau estate papers for William Cobb show that at that time (July 1833), his son William Cobb was a resident of Illinois. Thus it seems that the Cobb-Harmon couple are eliminated.

I would find it doubtful that William Cobb ever moved to SC. He was named co-executor (with his brother James) of the estate of Ambrose Cobb (their father) in Lincoln Co, NC in 1797. James died in 1805, leaving William the only person that could legally represent the estate, requiring his presence in Lincoln Co. The estate was not settled until 1818. William is found on the 1810 & 1820 census for Lincoln Co, and the 1830 census for Cape Girardeau Co, MO.

William Cobb died intestate in Cape Girardeau Co, MO in 1833. His estate
was inventoried, and the total of it could have been written on one square
of toilet paper. Seriously, it was nothing but a mule and a couple of goats
and chickens, etc. He and Polly apparently traveled light from NC to MO,
and hadn't been there very long when he died...certainly not long enough to
have started accumulating goods again. Mike Cobb
